Course Content: The course content is rather dynamic depending on the level of
students.
Here is what we read during the last year:
- Literary & Art movement: Surrealism
- Extracts from Frankenstein, and Hemingway’s writings
- Shakespearean Sonnet 140
- Short story: The Landlady by Roald Dahl
- Gary Larson’s Farside comic
- Poem: Resumé by Dorothy Parker
- Play: The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde
- Novel: Animal Farm by George Orwell
- If by Rudyard Kipling
- The Phantom Rickshaw by Rudyard Kipling
- Works of Rabindranath Tagore
Method: This course is delivered in English. There will be a weekly class of 90 minutes per
week involving group work in class with the professor and individual homework of around
60-90 minutes per week, wherever required, mostly consisting in reading or memorising
bits of text in English. After each session, whenever applicable, you will receive and email
summarising the class, detailing any preparation that you would need for the next class
and have access to the classroom presentation for the session.
What to expect: This is a course focussed on developing a capacity to communicate in
English with ease and hence the class and homework exercises will often involve reading
a short text, repeating certain words to make sure that the pronunciation is clear enough to be understood, memorising text to be repeated in class and sometimes writing a review
before sharing it verbally in the class. Expect to speak a lot.
What not to expect: This is not an English language course and hence doesn’t offer any
grammar training in the English language. This isn’t a phonetic course either, while there
shall be a few simple exercises to help the students improve their pronunciation of
commonly mispronounced words, there shall be no accent training during the course
whatsoever.
